Newsflash – DOS Working to Solve Technological Issues with Overseas Passport and Visa Systems
On Tuesday, June 16, 2015, the Department of State (DOS) issued an alert regarding the Bureau of Consular Affairs’ ongoing technological issues with its overseas visa and passport systems, which were prompted by a hardware failure on June 9, 2015 that halted the flow of biometric clearance requests. Although passports have resumed processing, technical problems persist with the visa systems and have caused delays in printing visas and returning them to applicants. Other applicants will be contacted directly to reschedule their consular appointments.
The DOS has also advised that these technical problems are effecting global consular operations and are not specific to any particular country or visa category. Once the problem is resolved, the DOS will work to clear the backlog of pending visa cases as quickly as possible, with current priority given to assisting nonimmigrant visa applicants with urgent humanitarian travel and pending overseas adoption cases.
